Reto Fintschin has been a member and at the same time Chairman of the Executive Board of COGNOS AG since February 1, 2019. In this capacity he has been in charge of Ludwig Fresenius Schools and Hochschule Fresenius (Presence). Prior to that, from July 2017 he sat on the COGNOS AG Supervisory Board. Reto Fintschin is an agricultural engineer. Previously, he had been with EMS CHEMIE AG Switzerland for 35 years, the leading supplier of high-performance polymers and specialty chemicals. There, he held various executive positions in marketing and sales at home and abroad and was also a director of various company divisions and a member of the senior management. In addition, Reto Fintschin also held various administrative directorships.

Management Divisions COGNOS International, COGNOS Ventures


Dr. Matthias Afting joined the Executive Board of COGNOS AG on March 1, 2016. From July 2016 until January 2019 he was responsible for the Health & Science and Central Services divisions. Since February 1, 2019 he has headed the new COGNOS International management divisions, which include the higher education institutions LUNEX (Luxembourg) and AMBIS (Prague) and the company’s activities in Asia, as well as COGNOS Ventures, which serves to pool all the interests in innovative education start-ups. Before joining COGNOS, Dr. Afting was Head of Global HR and Organization at Vorwerk & Co. KG. Prior to that, he held the positions of Head of Personnel Development and Education Strategy at Deutsche Bahn AG and Executive Director of Personnel of DB Services GmbH. After his medical studies at the University of Saarland, Paris, Freiburg and Harvard University, Dr. Afting started his professional career with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Since 2008 Dr. Afting has been a member of the Supervisory Board of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management.

Matthias Martin has been a member of the Executive Board of COGNOS AG since July 1, 2017. On February 1, 2019 he took over the Central Services division. Prior to that, he had already held executive responsibilities for Finance & Controlling, IT and Central Services. Before he joined COGNOS, Matthias Martin worked as a tax advisor for BDO AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft. At COGNOS he took over the management of Accounting/Controlling in 2007 and was assigned general signatory powers. In addition Mr. Martin is a member of the executive management of Hochschule Fresenius gem. GmbH.

Management Divisions COGNOS Digital/Academies


Prof. Dr. Stefan Wiedmann has been a member of the Executive Board of COGNOS AG since July 1, 2017. As of February 1, 2019 he took over executive responsibilities for COGNOS Digital/Academies, where the group’s digital distance learning offerings, in particular onlineplus, the service provider Digital Solutions and the Fresenius Academy and the Management Academy are bundled. Prior to that he had already been the Executive Board member responsible for Management & Design and Professionals & Corporate Clients. In 2010 Mr. Wiedmann was appointed professor to Hochschule Fresenius. He is the executive director of onlineplus. His career milestones include posts at Nike Inc. and Ravensburger Spieleverlag GmbH. In addition, Mr. Wiedmann taught business management at the Universities of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart and at the Stuttgart Academy for Administration and Business.

Hochschule Fresenius – Presence


Sascha Kappes has been a member of the management board for the presence programs of Hochschule Fresenius since February 1, 2019. The graduate business economist with the main focus on personnel management has been working in various positions for Hochschule Fresenius gem. GmbH since 2006. From 2013 until 2018 he was in charge of the business of the university’s own Energiewirtschaft GmbH (INEWI) and since 2015 also of Hochschule Fresenius gem. GmbH, where he was Head of Human Resources and Head of University Organization/Administration from 2012. Prior to taking up his position at Hochschule Fresenius, Sascha Kappes worked for SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS GmbH from 1998 until 2006, where he also completed his business management training.

Kai Metzner has been a member of the management board with responsibility for the presence programs of Hochschule Fresenius as well as Executive Director of the sponsoring company of Hochschule Fresenius since February 1, 2019. In September 2017, Kai Metzner joined COGNOS group as Executive Director of AMD Akademie Mode & Design GmbH and Head of Business Development. Prior to that, the graduate business manager had held various executive positions for eight years at SRH Holding, for instance as sole Executive Director of several SRH higher education institutions. Kai Metzner started his career as a consultant. Subsequently he served as Executive Director for four years in the field of foreign and security policy for a worldwide operating foundation. Kai Metzner is also the spokesperson of Berlin-Brandenburg for the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions (VPH).

Ludwig Fresenius Schools


Jürgen Weinberg is the Management Board member responsible for Ludwig Fresenius Schools. Since 1996 Jürgen Weinberg has served as Executive Director of Ludwig Fresenius Schools, formerly corporate group DIE SCHULE für Berufe mit Zukunft. Since 2010 he has been authorized officer with signatory powers for COGNOS. In subsequent years he took over the management of further COGNOS companies such as PTL Die Praxis für therapeutische Leistungen GmbH, Mentor Fortbildungen GmbH and THALAMUS Schulen GmbH. Jürgen Weinberg is a graduate business economist and qualified German upper secondary school teacher for mathematics and chemistry. In this capacity he set up the Brecht evening school for higher education qualifications in Hamburg in 1986. At the beginning of 1990 he changed to the DIE SCHULE in Oldenburg/Osnabruck corporate group.
