Chief Executive Officer (CEO)/ Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Werner Unger was appointed to the Executive Board on 1 October 2021 and became its Chairman on 1 November 2021. In addition to his duties as CEO, he has served as COO of the Group since 1 January 2023. Mr Unger holds a degree in industrial engineering from Karlsruhe and began his career in the management trainee programme at Daimler Benz. He then worked for the pharmaceutical group Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH before moving to Institut Fresenius AG as commercial director and later board member. In this position he was responsible for the merger of the institute with SGS Germany and the subsequent integration processes. Since 2005 he has mainly worked as a freelance interim manager and consultant. His focus is on corporate development, IT and strategy development. Werner Unger has been working for COGNOS since August 2020 – initially as Chairman of the Board of Directors of COGNOS International SE, and from the end of 2020 additionally as Managing Director of COGNOS Education GmbH, Vienna.
Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Matthias Martin has been a member of the Executive Board of COGNOS Education Group since 1 July 2017. His focus is on the topics of Finance & Controlling and Central Services. Mr Martin studied business administration at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. Before joining COGNOS, Matthias Martin worked first as an auditor and later as a tax consultant for BDO AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft. There he was responsible for conducting annual and consolidated audits for numerous audit mandates, primarily in the area of healthcare and non-profit corporations. Before joining the group, Mr Martin also worked as a freelance tax consultant. At COGNOS, he was in charge of the accounting/controlling department from 2007 and was granted power of attorney. Mr Martin is also a member of the management of Hochschulen Fresenius gemeinnützige Trägergesellschaft mbH.
Chief Market Officer (CMO)
Kai Metzner has been active on the Board of the Education Group since 1 February 2020. Until the end of 2022, his area of responsibility included the group’s higher education institutions in the DACH region with the exception of distance learning. Since 1 January 2023, Mr Metzner has held the post of CMO. In this function, he is responsible for the processing of the individual education markets across the Group. Following a functional reorganisation of the Executive Board, he has overall responsibility for the marketing and sales of the entire education group. Kai Metzner has also been Managing Director of the sponsoring company and the operating companies of the Fresenius universities since 1 February 2019. In September 2017, Kai Metzner joined the COGNOS Group as Managing Director of AMD Akademie Mode & Design GmbH and Head of Business Development. The business graduate previously worked for SRH Holding for eight years in various management positions, including as sole managing director of several SRH universities. Kai Metzner started his career as a consultant. He then worked for four years as an executive director in the field of foreign and security policy for a globally active foundation. Kai Metzner is active on the federal board of the VPH Association of Private Universities and a member of the Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland state board of trustees of the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany.

Hochschule Fresenius – Presence
Sascha Kappes has been a member of the management board for the presence programs of Hochschule Fresenius since February 1, 2019. The graduate business economist with the main focus on personnel management has been working in various positions for Hochschule Fresenius gem. GmbH since 2006. From 2013 until 2018 he was in charge of the business of the university’s own Energiewirtschaft GmbH (INEWI) and since 2015 of Hochschule Fresenius gem. GmbH, where he was Head of Human Resources and Head of University Organization/Administration from 2012. Since October 2020, he has also been Managing Director of the Hochschule Fresenius online plus GmbH. Prior to taking up his position at Hochschule Fresenius, Sascha Kappes worked for SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS GmbH from 1998 until 2006, where he also completed his business management training.
Ludwig Fresenius Schools
Jürgen Weinberg is the Management Board member responsible for Ludwig Fresenius Schools. Since 1996 Jürgen Weinberg has served as Executive Director of Ludwig Fresenius Schools, formerly corporate group DIE SCHULE für Berufe mit Zukunft. Since 2010 he has been authorized officer with signatory powers for COGNOS. In subsequent years he took over the management of further COGNOS companies such as PTL Die Praxis für therapeutische Leistungen GmbH, Mentor Fortbildungen GmbH and THALAMUS Schulen GmbH. Jürgen Weinberg is a graduate business economist and qualified German upper secondary school teacher for mathematics and chemistry. In this capacity he set up the Brecht evening school for higher education qualifications in Hamburg in 1986. At the beginning of 1990 he changed to the DIE SCHULE in Oldenburg/Osnabruck corporate group.
